Born in Reading, Berkshire, Sam grew up in Tavistock, Devon. He first picked up the Cornet at the age of 10 and learnt his trade playing with local brass bands, concert bands, and big bands in the South-West.

Sam moved to Yorkshire in September 2000, where he studied for a degree in music. Having played with some of the UK’s finest brass bands for many years (Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, Brighouse and Rastrick Band, and Grimethorpe Colliery Band), whilst juggling his family life and career as a secondary music teacher, he turned his attention to more commercial work – recording and touring with folk musicians Jon Boden, Sam Sweeney, Jack Rutter and John Tams.

Leaving the classroom in 2017, Sam’s passion for brass banding continues to be the focus of much of his work as a musical director and brass band adjudicator. He is also proud to be an Eclipse performance artist.

In 2018, Sam formed his own function band Backstage Brass, a modern six-piece brass band. Travelling the length and breadth of the country, they perform at weddings, festivals, corporate functions, and live music venues.
